Seems like many are looking forward to having A-series CPUs in Macs. The speed and power consumption benefits would be significant. However, it comes at the expense of compatibility with other x86 OSes and virtualization. For many, that’s a real inconvenience. #NeverForgetSoftPC

Kept laughing to myself during Apple’s talk today every time they described how much faster these Macs are compared to the last revisions. They _should_ be that much faster when you compare them to 4 year old computers…

Looks like the low-end 6 core CPU might not have Hyper-Threading. That extra $200 is well worth it if this is the case.
Looks like the high end Mac Mini CPU is the Core i7-8700. It scores 5304 on single core and 23010 on multi-core, which is 46% faster on single core and 31% faster on multi-core than my 2013 6 core Mac Pro.
I was planning to replace a 2012 Mac Mini server, but it’s tempting to use it as my desktop until the new Mac Pros are finally ready.
Any idea of what the Geekbench scores are for the 6 core CPUs in the new Mac Minis?
Really nice to see 10Gbe at just a $100 option though.
Apple Store is back up. $1400 for the 64GB RAM option on the Mac Mini. Another $1400 for the 2TB SSD option.
If Apple releases the rumored “Pro Mac Mini” on October 30th, then we’ll have a Pro iMac, a Pro Mac Mini, and a Pro MacBook Pro, yet still no Pro Mac Pro.
If you’re in the Florida panhandle, please take this storm seriously and stay safe!
My wife, Katrina, had a hurricane take over her name. Now with Michael reaching a category 4, it’s looking increasingly likely that people will be associating my name with a hurricane for quite some time. :-/
Been listening to my RAID disks thrashing constantly for the the past few hours, courtesy of Arq backup maintenance. Managed to renice the process to let me work a little easier, but everything is still pretty laggy. Got a new SSD setup coming, and it can’t arrive soon enough.
I’m getting to the point where even a desktop RAID is too slow for what I’m doing. Hitting a performance wall and I really need something quicker, without spending $$$$ for a ton of SSD storage. Decided to blog about the problem in more detail here:

The Follow My Delivery feature that UPS has now is a pretty cool way to watch your packages on delivery day. However, I’m finding myself having a love/hate relationship with it. “Getting closer… NO, don’t turn that way!!”
Planning to buy a Series 4, but completely torn on the 40mm vs 44mm sizes. I’ve never owned an Apple Watch before, but when trying them on in years past it felt like the 42 was the best option. 44mm looks like it might cross the line into “too big” territory though.
Surprised we didn’t see an AirPower charging mat at today’s event. New phones look okay. New watch looks great.
Had to swap my SIM card in order to finally get WiFi calling to work on our Cricket plan. So refreshing to have cell “reception” at home for the first time ever.
Sure would be nice if Apple allowed different versions of Swift compilers to be downloaded/installed as components in Xcode, similar to their simulator download support.
Great, let’s add yet another version of Xcode on my Mac… Up to 5 Xcodes now, just to cover all the Swift versions used in projects I work on. #SwiftLife
Just watched Nanette by @HannahGadsby. What an incredible thought-provoking perspective on the gender turmoil in society today. Check it out on Netflix if you haven’t already.
I think that’s the first time I’ve actually swizzled an init method. Was only half-expecting it to work.
